The outspoken South African politician and Pan-Africanist, Mr. Julius Malema has openly condemned the leadership of Ghana for supporting the Israelites’ suppression of the Palestinian people. Speaking at the event held by the pressure group Arise Ghana in Accra on Tuesday, January 23, the leader of the Economic Fighters Group (EFF) bemoans the declaration of support by a section of Ghanaian leaders as unfortunate.

He said, “Shame on the leadership of Ghana for saying they support what is happening against the people of Gaza. They must be ashamed of themselves because any African who knows what settlers do when they settle in your country will never support that nonsense that is happening in Palestine.”

It can be recalled that the President of Ghana, Nana Akuffo Addo, in his speech at the headquarters of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), asserted Ghana’s unwavering support to Israel following the Hamas Attack.

The President’s comment received a mixed reaction from the people of Ghana. Several Ghanaians distanced themselves from the President’s statement and described it as regrettable. Key among these individuals is Mr. Kwasi Pratt Jnr., the General Secretary of the Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG), who went on to organize major protests in solidarity with the people of Palestine.

Unlike Ghana, the leadership of South Africa, where Mr. Malema hails from, has been unequivocal in condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza and its treatment of the Palestinian people. Mr. Malema further expressed his profound gratitude to the South African government for paying heed to a petition by the EFF to have the Israeli Ambassador and embassy removed from the South African soil. “We cannot share territory with people who have declared war on humanity” he justified. Also, he described Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide that should not be tolerated and must be condemned in no uncertain terms.
