Study Tips

TIME MANAGEMENT

  • Set time aside for quality study
  • Set short and long term goals
  • Create a study plan and stick to it, include your work, hobbies, family commitments, and social life in the plan
  • Do not skip class, this leaves gap in your knowledge
  • Space out your learning sessions, you can distribute study load over several days and give yourself time to rest in between

ORGANIZATION

  • Keep track of all your deadlines and create your own deadlines to keep you ahead of tasks
  • Organize your note taking to avoid becoming confused
  • Create a filing system and organize your study materials in a clear manner

ACTIVE STUDYING

  • Do not just re-read texts and notes, engage with the material, explain concepts to yourself, formulate questions to solve, create visual aids (concept maps, diagrams)
  • Study with a friend or a group of colleagues and explain concepts to each other. This helps you share resources, keeps you motivated and accountable, and helps you quiz yourself and others on the material
  • Test yourself through quizzes, flashcards, etc.

READING

  • Schedule time for your reading
  • Learn to read critically and efficiently: read headings and summaries, ask yourself questions about each section, try to remember the answers to your questions without looking at the text, then review what needs to be refreshed

ACTIVE LISTENING & NOTE TAKING

  • Practice active listening, focus on what is being said and take notes
  • Notes help you remember information and will be key when reviewing for exams or completing assignments
  • Review your notes and add to them after class while the information is still fresh

CREATE A STUDY SPACE

  • If possible, have a designated study area where you will not be distracted. When you sit in your study area your mindset will help you get motivated
  • Try to study at the library, study areas, etc.
