Advising

Advising is a process of giving students guidance, support and encouragement”.

Role of Advisor

Each student at FHS is assigned two advisors: a registration advisor and an academic advisor.

Registration Advisor

General Advising

  1. Inform students of university policies and procedures
  2. Verify that students have taken university placement/aptitude tests
  3. Explain to students academic and administrative processes of the University as well as the expected standards of achievement
  4. Discuss with students program requirements, policies and procedures

Note that items (3) and (4) are discussed in the orientation session for new students and in the group advising session.

Registration

  1. Plan with students their course work schedule in coordination with the academic adviser
  2. Follow up on student registration

Monitoring Student’s Performance

  1. Maintain students records
  2. Follow up on students’ academic performance (petitions, probation and other issues)
  3. Coordinate and inform the academic adviser of the academic standing of the student
  4. Check students’ graduation requirements
  5. Offer help and encouragement to the student
  6. Be protective of student’s privacy of information
  7. Be available for consultation, especially at beginning and end of semester

Scheduling

Prepare program teaching schedule in coordination with the Student Services Office (SSO)

Academic Advisor

  1. Help students set educational goals
  2. Help students set career plans
  3. Advise students on academic matters such as electives, practical and culminating experiences
  4. Guide students, in coordination with SSO, to available university educational resources, student employment, financial aid, and scholarships
  5. Follow up on students’ academic performance and other issues in coordination with the registration adviser
  6. Update registration adviser on student- related issues as they arise
  7. Reinforce student’s self-reliance and decision-making skills
  8. Offer help and encouragement to students
  9. Be protective of student’s privacy of information
  10. Be available for consultation

Who is my advisor? To whom do I refer to?

The Council on Education for Public Health assures quality in public health education and training to achieve excellence in practice, research and service, through collaboration with organizational and community partners.

The Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health was founded in 1924 at Johns Hopkins University within the School of Hygiene and Public Health to promote the graduate study of public health, and to recognize outstanding achievement in the new field.

The ASPPH is the voice of accredited academic public health, representing schools and programs accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).

Aspher is dedicated to strengthening the role of public health by improving education and training of public health professionals for both practice and research

The CUGH is a rapidly growing Washington, DC based organization of over 170 academic institutions and other organizations from around the world engaged in addressing global health challenges.
