In the wake of virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lebanon faced unique trials: the catastrophic August 4th explosion and the devaluation of the Lebanese Lira. UNICEF reported that 163 schools were damaged, impacting 70,000 students and 7,600 teachers. Families struggled to afford devices, with some sharing a single smartphone screen.
Amid this crisis, “Their Right to Learn” emerged from the efforts of AUB undergraduate students. Refusing to accept education as a privilege, they sought to aid their community. They aimed to bridge the gap for Lebanon’s students and teachers.
Initially, the focus was on collecting and donating electronic devices to public schools. Then, in collaboration with KB-SAIL’s Education Team, the focus shifted to establish computer labs in partnered public schools. This shift marked a move from individual support to transforming entire spaces.
Their Right to Learn transitioned from securing devices for students and teachers to creating sustainable computer labs in each school. This project is a story of resilience, collaboration, and a commitment to ensuring a brighter future for Lebanon’s youth.
KB-SAIL’s Education Team embarked on a transformative computer literacy journey with 26 female students from public schools. Guided by dedicated computer science students, the program spanned five months and was held at AUB, covering essentials like Microsoft Office and Python programming. From foundational concepts to practical applications using the Turtle module, students delved into web development with HTML and CSS, culminating in personalized website portfolios.
The emphasis on hands-on learning, including lab sessions and individualized feedback, ensured not only theoretical understanding but practical proficiency. The team witnessed empowerment of these students as they built a robust foundation in computer literacy and programming at AUB, in addition to forming a connection with students.
KB-SAIL’s Education Team initiated constructive dialogues among educators, leading to a deliberate selection of the community school model. The main pillars of a community school are: partnerships with families, powerful learning tools, authentic community engagement, integrated health and social support to students, infrastructure and basic learning resources, and broad-based leadership capacity for improvement.
This decision, influenced by global best practices and successful implementations in challenging environments, served as the cornerstone for collaboratively crafting a shared vision with school practitioners.
Community Health

Capacity Building
The Community Health Initiative at SAIL connects AUB students and residents, including those in nursing, medicine, and family medicine, to the Primary Healthcare Center in the Coastal Chouf Area. This connection offers the students a valuable training site and strengthens their skills by grounding their education in community practice.

Community Kitchen
During a recent wave of internal displacement in Lebanon, the Primary Healthcare Center in the Coastal Chouf Area, transformed into a community kitchen, where local women prepared three meals daily for 300 displaced individuals. Ingredients were stocked and bought using scientific approaches to reduce waste. This initiative reflects SAIL for Change’s vision of community-led solutions in moments of hardship.

School Screening
The Community Health initiative at SAIL assisted the Primary Healthcare Center in Coastal Chouf Area in their activity with a local public school, screening 300 students. Results revealed three urgent priorities for student wellbeing: mental health, hygiene, and nutrition. These insights guide ongoing community health interventions.

Supporting the Primary Healthcare Center for the Coastal Chouf Area (PHC-CCA)
The Community Health Initiative at SAIL for Change, in collaboration with Damouras, AUBMC, and DT Care, launched a primary healthcare center serving the Coastal Chouf Area. The project followed a needs assessment that highlighted a significant gap in medical access, especially among elderly residents who had gone years without clinical visits. The team is engaging medical residents, social workers, and nursing students to adopt a Home Health Care model, aiming to equip the center and create a supportive environment for community members.

Community Health Center in Karantina
The Community Health Initiative worked with the Ministry of Public Health to strengthen operations at the Karantina Primary Health Care Center. Support included replacing lost medical equipment, establishing partnerships with local institutions, and integrating trainees and professional healthcare workers to enhance service capacity at the center.

Their Right to Health
The Community Health Initiative advanced the principle of health as a universal right by dedicating four months to community engagement in the Karantina area. The team collaborated with families to identify service gaps and inform healthcare planning. In partnership with the Ministry of Public Health, the “صحتن بالدني” (Community Right to Health) campaign was launched to secure medical supplies, compensate community workers, and sustain essential equipment for the clinic.

COVID-19 Taskforce
The Community Health Initiative supported the national response to COVID-19 by creating a framework for local Task Force units and developing a management guidebook. Training programs were delivered to nurses and doctors to strengthen the local workforce. The team also contributed to public health communication, partnered with the ministerial COVID-19 committee, collaborated with NGOs on vaccine awareness, and supported vaccine accessibility through a registration initiative.
Environmental Health
KB-SAIL’s Environment Team assessed air quality and contaminants in soil and other environmental samples from the affected communities.
