“Coming Out in Beirut. Canceled” – An Exhibition of Marginalized Artworks
2024 Issue No. 2
Amidst the bustling cultural scene of Beirut, the AUB Art Galleries and Collections recently held an extraordinary art exhibit. This innovative exhibition aimed to shed light on the less visible aspects of contemporary artistic and collecting practices by bringing forward artworks that have long been confined to the storage locations of remote galleries and collectors’ closets.
“Coming Out in Beirut. Canceled” stands as a poignant reminder of the power of art to reflect and challenge societal norms and prejudices. Through its innovative approach and the curator’s adaptability, the exhibition successfully brought to light the hidden narratives of marginalized artworks, drawing parallels with broader issues of visibility, acceptance, and recognition within society. Even in its unfinished state, in respect to the war in Gaza, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the complexities of artistic and personal expression in the face of adversity.
