This workshop is designed for various health and mental health professionals, graduate students and medical residents.
Description/Purpose
The purpose of this workshop is to introduce and sensitize healthcare professionals on gender and sexual minorities concepts, health inequities and highlight the unique mental health considerations for this group and its impact on their functioning and well-being. It will also introduce the concept of “affirmative therapy” as opposed to “conversion therapy”, and will focus on the theory, research and skills needed to implement such therapy in clinical settings.
The workshop will highlight the Lebanese cultural context through the presentation, case studies, examples and role play which will offer the participants an interactive hands-on experience.
Learning Objectives
After this activity, you will be able to:
- Define sexual and gender minorities and cite challenges and difficulties they face within the Lebanese society which often relate to mental health problems.
- Recognize the health inequities gender and sexual minorities experience and identify the challenges they face while accessing healthcare, including mental health.
- Describe affirmative therapy with its various components of communication, reflection and interpretation within a psychotherapy treatment setting.
