2020 ISSUE, SPOTLIGHT

Written by Chadi Abi Fadel

If you have ever been to the pool or the gym at AUB, you would probably know Ramzi Marrouch, AUB’s athlete of the year in 2019. On any given weekday, he would either be training or studying. He is part of the rugby, swim, handball and polo teams. And to top that, Ramzi has a good academic record and was featured on the Dean’s Honor’s list. We had the chance to interview him.

A short back story

Ramzi grew up in a household that takes sports seriously: his father was a competitive swimmer and champion before he had a family. He would constantly worry about maintaining good academic performance while getting ready for the next championship. This sense of responsibility from a young age and his high fitness levels helped him excel in multiple sports. At the age of fourteen, he joined the following school teams: basketball, handball and volleyball. His discipline and determination helped him shine in all of these sports. In AUB, he joined the swimming, water polo, handball and rugby teams.

Athlete of the year

In 2019, he won the Athlete of the Year award for his exceptional performance in the four varsities. In his words: “I entered the Hostler sport center confident I would be able to win the award”.

In his first two years, he suffered through multiple injuries that handicapped his ability to engage in sports. However, in his third year and while recovering from knee complications, he engaged in water polo and swimming. He soon re-entered the handball and rugby teams. Ramzi credits this award to his high levels of commitment and perseverance.

Ramzi’s routine

Ramzi wakes up every week day at around 5 AM, heads to the gym, which is followed by breakfast and then a shower. He arrives at his classes at 9 AM, comes back home at 4 PM and studies in his free time. He usually finishes his day with a training session at around 8PM for one of the university’s varsity teams. He goes to sleep no later than 12AM to be able to wake up early the next day.

While this looks like a challenging routine, Ramzi states likes living his life like this. He finds leisure on the weekend.

The routine is all the more impressive when taking into account the fact that Ramzi is a mechanical engineer. His time management strategy is targeted towards athletic and academic performance. He feels good about himself when he knows that he is spending his energy wisely.

Other than the obvious physical benefits he got out of this routine, Ramzi also got psychological benefits. He appreciates activities that benefit him in the long run even when he doesn’t particularly enjoy doing them.

Ramzi Marrouch is a great example of perseverance and discipline. It is inspiring to see someone who views his time as a valuable thing and invests it in a positive way.
