Our final year project (FYP) idea started as an investigation into the utilization of non-biodegradable recycled waste materials in the production of a new eco-conscious pavement mix to be utilized for road maintenance. This mix will be used to produce prefabricated tiles to cover up uneven manholes and to produce pallets to be directly melted into potholes.
Hence, our FYP idea will help a community in its waste issues while improving its road safety and serviceability. Once the general idea for our FYP was set, we started considering applying to the FYP Accelerator program, especially since the end product of our FYP being an actual commercial product. As such, we applied to the program, named our team’s startup Plasfill, and got accepted. The program was heavily focused on the business side of our FYP, while the technical side was to be our responsibility to pursue with the help of our FYP advisor, Dr. Ghassan Chehab. In order to find the best mix for this new pavement material, we looked into previous studies
and at several waste material properties, concluding that the main component of our mix should be recycled high-density polyethene (HDPE) and recycled tire rubber. We specifically chose those two non-biodegradable waste materials since more than 340,000 tons of the plastic waste is dumped daily and almost 4.1 million car and truck tires are discarded globally every day. Multiple mixes and samples were made to reach the most suitable mix based on the compressive strength, flexure, and fatigue tests. The optimal mix developed turned out to be composed of 68% HDPE, 17% calcium carbonate and 15% rubber (by volume), with an average compressive strength of 16.57 MPa.
The compressive strength test outputs of the mix are shown in the figure below. Now, with the accelerator program coming to an end, we have to say that the experience was a once-in-a-lifetime one. We entered the program thinking that it is just something to challenge ourselves with, never considering that we would be later applying and winning different national and international competitions such as Hult competition in an attempt to fund and flourish our startup. Today, we are seriously considering venturing into the entrepreneurial life after graduation and being part of this vibrant and energetic community with our startup.
