SOCIAL SERVICES

The Social Service department at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), is one of the first of its kind, in Lebanon and the region. The department was established in the 1950’s in an aim to help patients and their families cope and adjust to social, psychological and economic problems resulting from illness, with particular attention to the needs of people who are vulnerable, oppressed and living in poverty.

The social workers are prepared to assist patients with a range of social, emotional, family, and health related problems. They also serve as a link between the patient, community organizations, and other AUBMC staff. As part of the healthcare team, social workers are assigned to inpatients units, infusion center and outpatient clinics.

Both inpatients and outpatients are eligible for help and aid regardless of their nationality, race, religion, and gender.

Depending on the identified need, the department provides a spectrum of services that can be found on the following link: http://aubmc.org.lb/patientcare/adm_ser/social-serv/Pages/social-ser.aspx

TIES

i

“Ties” is an NGO at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) introduced at the Patient Affairs office. It supports patients and their families through their hospitalisation, by trying to divert their attention away from sickness to draw focus on their inner power.

Ties is a volunteer based initiative that aims to offer disease alleviation and support through different occupational and recreational activities such as live music rounds, arts and crafts, relaxation exercises and others like storytelling.

Volunteers are committed to making a difference throughout the patients and families’ stay at the Medical Center. This initiative’s main pillars are: Trust, inspiration, encouragement, and strength.

During the volunteering journey, volunteers focus on drawing smiles on patients’ faces by organising interactive games, creative skills activities and selecting musical pieces that can help make patients feel cared for.

Ties volunteer prepare a calendar of activities on a monthly basis that usually include musical performances, occupational activities and storytelling to entertain patients in all NKBCI patient units.
