The Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute is in constant collaboration with several departments at AUBMC:
Urology Department:
Current collaboration involves clinical care, education as well as clinical and translational research, jointly organizing:
- Weekly Genito-urinary tumor Board done to review and discuss management plan for patient with Genito-urinary tumors (JCI requirements)
- Monthly MD Anderson GU oncology case discussion meeting
- Educational sessions on oncology topics for urologists and urology fellows
- St Gallen satellite meeting November 2017 during which a consensus of treatment for Middle East population was discussed and will be issued
- Prostate cancer translational research program
Surgery Department:
Current collaboration involves, similar to the urology collaboration, clinical care, education as well as clinical and translational research, jointly organizing:
- Weekly GastrointestinaI and Breast tumor boards on Tuesdays, lung on Fridays, sarcoma/melanoma/rare on alternate Mondays.
- Monthly GastrointestinaI and Breast international tumor boards with MD Anderson and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center MSKCC
- Collaboration with surgical colleagues on national/international meetings in Lebanon such as Beirut Breast Cancer Conference, Best of ASCO, LSMO meeting and Angiogenesis meeting
- On-going clinical research while making use of the data in Tissue Bank
- On-going clinical research on bladder, renal and adrenal tumors
LOCAL COLLABORATIONS
The Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute maintains local medical collaborations with Keserwan Medical Center, and Nabatieh Governmental University Hospital.
REGIONAL COLLABORATIONS
The Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute has also established regional and international collaborations with sister institutions that enhance teaching, training, management of cases and research activities.
Current regional collaborations include: the King Hussein Cancer Center, in Amman.

- Shared clinic pathways and protocols for standardized patient care
- Annual Scientific Conference “Connecting through research” that focus on site specific topics
- Staff exchange programs
- Consultative activity pertinent to specific complex cases
- Shared research projects in multi-central studies.
INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS
International collaborations include three of the premier comprehensive cancer centers in the United States: the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston Texas, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University in Atlanta Georgia.
- MD Anderson Cancer Center:
The Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute’s affiliation with MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) started since June 2007 to include several areas of collaboration that are not limited to: - Physician education and training:
- Joint Multidisciplinary Tumor boards
- Elective Observership for fellows
- Advanced fellowship training
- Joint Scientific conferences and meetings
- Patient care level:
- Exchange of protocols to provide the most updated treatments and patient care.
- Research collaboration:
- Many joint publications have been published in all oncology areas
- Nursing and other technical support staff training:
- Nursing staff and technical staff are going to MD Anderson for specific training.
- Quality assurance programs:
- Over the past 10 years, the Radiation Oncology Medical Physics team has been collaborating with MDACC in measuring the linear accelerators radiation output level using the TLD Audit service from MD Anderson.
- Attendance by a delegation at the annual Global Academics Programs (GAP) conference:
- Work is in line with GAP International goals
- Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center:
The Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute’s affiliation with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center started since June 2013 to include several areas of collaboration that are not limited to:

- Joint Multidisciplinary Tumor boards with Gastrointestinal and Breast cancer
- Elective Observer ship for fellows
- Advanced fellowship training
- Joint Scientific conferences and meetings:
- Patient care level:
- Exchange of protocols to provide the most updated treatments and patient care
- Research collaboration:
- Tissue Bank was created in collaboration with the Surgery Department to Enhance and help the accrual of samples and to develop cancer lines for Middle East population
- Scientific endeavors:
- A Joint course on breast and Gastrointestinal case management was offered twice in both 2013 and 2015 for both physicians and student
- Physician education and training:
- Institut Curie and OECI Network:
Our Collaboration started on Jan 2023, led by Dr Tfayli with Institut curie focusing on 2 main areas:
- Collaborate in research projects and clinical research training between Curie and AUB
- NKBCI becoming an associate member of the European Organization of Cancer Institutes (OECI).
- Jules Bordet and Oncodistinct Network:
NKBCI became a member of the Oncodistinct network in 2020, a collaboration led by Dr Ali Shamseddine mainly focusing on clinical research and clinical trial work.
Created at the initiative of several cancer centers in and outside of Europe, the Oncodistinct Network is a multidisciplinary group of investigators with an expertise in early drug development and clinical research; NKBCI is a founding member of the network and the only non-European member of the group.
- Several multi-center clinical research projects were initiated among several subspecialized working groups.
Established in May 2019 after a visit by the Cedar Cancer Foundation Board members to NKBCI and AUB; the work is on the following areas:
- Elective Rotation for fellows
- Residency Program in Radiation Oncology
- Research Collaboration
